Site-specific two-channel video installation by Alexander Steig: cameras film Rubens’s Crucifixion of St Peter and the masonry of the church and transmit the images live to the tower room, where they address surveillance and self-observation.
About the museum
The Kunst-Station was founded in 1987 on the initiative of Jesuit priest Friedhelm Mennekes in the late Gothic parish church of Sankt Peter. The idea was a dialogue between church and contemporary art, linking pastoral care with artistic engagement. It first became known through a series of nearly fifty contemporary triptychs that hung one after another in the apse between 1987 and 1994. After heated debates about Alfred Hrdlicka's "Crucifixion" in 1994, this series came to an end; James Lee Byars (1995) and Anish Kapoor (1996) then provided further key spatial references.
During the renovation from 1997, exhibition activity was suspended. With its reopening in November 2000, it began with sculptures by Eduardo Chillida that responded to his cross altar in the church. When this altar could no longer serve as the parish altar, the space was redesigned. Since autumn 2004, artists have again responded to the place with works in the gallery, throughout the church space or at individual points.
An advisory board selects the invited positions; applications are not possible. In more than four decades there have been over 250 exhibitions; in addition, there are concerts of new music, readings and lectures. The work is supported by the Kölner Rubens-Gesellschaft, the association of friends and supporters of Sankt Peter.
