Around 250 works on paper and site-specific installations by the Amsterdam artist, who engages with Vincent van Gogh and questions of psychological vulnerability; accompanied by the lecture series "State of the Soul".
Installation in Studio West made of pictorial objects, photography, sound and light, which takes satellite signals and everyday objects as its starting point and explores disrupted transmission.
To mark the 90th birthday of the Frankfurt artist, Studio East shows drawings and sculptural scenarios from his late work.
About the museum
The Kunsthalle is run by the Kunstverein Darmstadt, which traces its roots to the Kunstverein für das Großherzogtum Hessen, founded in 1833/37, making it one of the oldest art associations in Germany. After decades of changing venues, the association received its own Neo-Renaissance building at the Rheintor in 1889, which incorporated the portico of a neoclassical guardhouse by Georg Moller.
The building was destroyed in the firestorm of September 11, 1944, and the ruins were later cleared. The Kunstverein, re-formed after the war, commissioned a new building by architect Theo Pabst following a 1955 competition; it opened in 1957. Its clear steel-and-glass architecture is regarded as an important example of Darmstadt's postwar modernism and is a listed monument; the Moller portico now stands freely in front of the building.
Pabst extended the building in 1964, and for the association's 150th anniversary in 1987, a northern annex with an exhibition hall facing the garden was added. From 2014, the facade, skylight and building services were restored in line with heritage requirements, and the forecourt was redesigned. The Kunsthalle has no collection of its own; instead, it presents several solo and thematic exhibitions each year, complemented by smaller presentations in the upstairs studios and a program of lectures, concerts and guided tours.
