About the museum
The building on Schillerstraße was dedicated in 1913 as the Friedenskapelle (Peace Chapel) of the Evangelical free-church congregation and has been a listed monument since 1986. At the end of 2019 the congregation held its last service there after 106 years.
The entrepreneur and art collector Frank Hense, who comes from Gevelsberg, bought the chapel in 2019 at the suggestion of the then mayor. In 2020 and 2021 it was comprehensively converted while respecting monument protection. The Kunsthalle Gevelsberg opened on June 20, 2021.
In solo and group exhibitions, the house shows works from the Hense Collection, which comprises around 1,000 works of contemporary art, supplemented by loans from elsewhere. The Kunsthalle is operated by the Kunsthalle Hense gGmbH.
