About the museum

The municipal exhibition hall opened on September 19, 1991, on the Hawerkamp site under the direction of Gail B. Kirkpatrick. In 2004 it moved to its present rooms on the top floor of Speicher II in the Münster Stadthafen (city harbor), initially called AZKM – Ausstellungshalle zeitgenössische Kunst Münster (AZKM – Exhibition Hall for Contemporary Art Münster). In 2012 it was renamed Kunsthalle Münster.

It shows national and international contemporary art in changing solo and group exhibitions, and sees itself as a site of production and a laboratory. Talks, lectures, guided tours, film programs, symposia and performances accompany the exhibitions.

As part of the Kulturamt (Cultural Affairs Office), the Kunsthalle also looks after art in public spaces in the city of Münster, which grows with each edition of the Skulptur Projekte, and it uses the Stadthausgalerie at Platz des Westfälischen Friedens once or twice a year. Since 2020 it has been affiliated with the Residence NRW⁺ fellowship program for artists and curators.
