About the museum
The core of the museum is the permanent display of plaster casts that the art historian Paul Clemen began building up when the Art History Institute was founded in 1902. In 1913 the "Skulpturenhalle" (sculpture hall) opened for them in the glass-covered inner courtyard; by the mid-1930s the collection had grown to just over 600 pieces.
In October 1944 a bombing raid severely damaged the hall, and the collection was further depleted by theft and weathering. From 2008, Harald Wolter-von dem Knesebeck had pieces restored and re-presented, and expanded the collection. In 2013 it reopened as the Paul-Clemen-Museum; in 2015 the renewed Italy department followed.
Today the museum displays casts from late antiquity to the 19th century on the third floor of the P26 at Poststraße, along with a few originals and modern readymade replicas, plus photographs, graphics and historical teaching aids. The exhibition space is curated by a student exhibition group and academic staff; exhibitions on current topics and contemporary art complement the collection.
