Markus-Röhling-Stolln

Show mine in Annaberg-Buchholz-Frohnau: ride the mine train into silver, cobalt, and uranium mining; the highlight is a 9-meter pumping wheel.

Opening hoursAdmission from €15

About the museum

After silver was discovered on the Schreckenberg in 1491, the driving of drainage adits for the mines began around 1500; in the following years the St.-Annen-Stolln, today's Markus-Röhling-Stolln, was created. Its great era began in 1733 with the discovery of a rich ore vein: until mining ended in 1857, about 15 tons of silver and large quantities of cobalt ore were extracted here.

From 1948 to 1953, Wismut explored the mine field once more for uranium, driving more than a kilometer of new tunnels and a shaft for this purpose, but ceased work again for lack of worthwhile deposits.

In 1990 the association Altbergbau "Markus-Röhling-Stolln" Frohnau was founded, which opened up the mine and opened it as a show mine in July 1994. Today visitors ride the mine train about 600 meters into the mountain and see evidence of 18th- and 19th-century silver and cobalt mining as well as of uranium exploration. The highlight is a reconstructed Kunstrad (pumping wheel) nine meters in diameter. The mine is part of the Montanregion Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
