About the museum
The religious community of the Missionary Brothers of Saint Francis (CMSF) goes back to the German Brother Paulus Moritz, who founded it in 1901 in Nagpur, India, as a community of the Third Order Regular of Saint Francis. What was new at the time was that brothers trained in a craft did not just preach the faith but conveyed it through practical work. According to the community, it now has around 365 members living in 80 houses and working in 50 dioceses in eight countries.
In Germany, the Missionary Brothers are based at the mission house in Bug, a district in the south of Bamberg. Here a museum shows objects from the countries where the brothers work: art and crafts from India, including pieces from the 16th century, marquetry, ivory carvings and paintings, along with mounted wild animals, fossils, piranhas and a shrunken head. According to Bamberg Tourismus, the collection also includes finds more than 500 years old from an Inca cave.
Another part of the exhibition presents the community's present-day mission and development work, for example in India, Sri Lanka, Paraguay and Bolivia. The museum sees itself as a contribution to understanding between peoples and is deliberately kept small and easy to take in.
