Motorworld Köln
Classic car center in the historic Butzweilerhof airport, with a freely accessible permanent exhibition on the career of Michael Schumacher.
About the museum
Motorworld Köln | Rheinland occupies the grounds of the former Butzweilerhof airport in the Ossendorf district. The first airplanes took off here even before World War I; in 1936, what was then a major commercial airport received a new terminal building designed by Hans Mehrtens. After World War II, the military used the airfield, and in 1957 civil aviation moved for good to the new Köln/Bonn airport. The listed historic buildings were later carefully and extensively restored.
In June 2018, the Motorworld Group opened its tenth location here. Covering around 50,000 square meters, the complex combines the sale, servicing and storage of classic and modern vehicles with restaurants, a themed hotel and large event spaces. The classic cars, youngtimers (modern classics) and sports cars on display in glass storage boxes and workshops change constantly.
The site owes its exhibition character above all to the Michael Schumacher Private Collection, on view as a permanent exhibition since the 2018 opening, not far from Schumacher's hometown of Kerpen. It spans everything from the karts of his early years to sports cars and the Formula 1 race cars of his championship seasons, and displays trophies, helmets, racing suits and personal mementos. Loans from the Mercedes-Benz Museum round out the show. Access to the entire complex is free; guided tours also tell visitors more about the history of the airport.
