About the museum
At the end of the 1960s, the old school in Geismar was closed, so the rooms could be put to new use. In 1970 the "Volkskundlicher Arbeitskreis Geismar Museum am Thie e. V." (also called Museumsverein Geismar) was founded. It built up the museum over the following decades and still runs it on a voluntary basis. A generational change in the association came about in 2024 through new members.
The collection includes maps and drawings of medieval to modern Geismar. Above all, it shows the everyday life of earlier times: an old kitchen, a Biedermeier-style living room, a historical general store, the acquisition of clothing and shoes, woodworking, and textile production with a passementerie loom (Posamentierwebstuhl) from a Göttingen uniform manufactory.
The old bakehouse and the study of Moritz Jahn, former head of the old Geismar school, can only be seen on request and with a special guided tour.
