About the museum
The Museum der Göttinger Chemie was founded in 1979 at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Georg-August-Universität. It documents the history of the discipline in Göttingen since the university's founding in 1737 and is associated with names such as Johann Friedrich Gmelin and Friedrich Wöhler, as well as several Nobel laureates, including Richard Zsigmondy and Otto Wallach.
The permanent exhibition and the storage hold objects and documents of very different kinds, from historical laboratory equipment and experimental setups to writings by lecturers. The collection is continuously expanded through purchases and donations and reaches into the postwar period and the relocation of the faculty from the city center to the North Campus.
The museum has no budget of its own. Its basic funding comes from a friends' association made up mostly of chemistry professors and former graduates; in addition, the chemistry institutes support the museum.
