About the museum
The museum is located on the grounds of the LVR Clinic Bedburg-Hau on the Lower Rhine and is run by the Landschaftsverband Rheinland (Rhineland Regional Council). Its route follows the exhibition rooms and tells the story of the former Rheinische Provinzial-Heil- und Pflegeanstalt (Rhine Provincial Psychiatric Hospital) and its clinical operations.
Room 1 covers the history of the clinic, its supply facilities and patient buildings, treatment methods of the early 20th century, and the periods of World War I, the Weimar Republic and Nazi rule from 1933 to 1945. Rooms 2 to 8 recreate everyday settings such as day rooms, bathing and washing rooms, a kitchen and nurses' rooms. Rooms 9 to 19 show medical equipment, the clinic pharmacy, large dormitories, restraint devices such as the straitjacket, and the development of bed treatment.
According to the museum's records, the exhibition also commemorates the deportation of patients in March 1940 and the victims of the patient killings (Krankenmorde). A memorial book and a memorial in front of the clinic chapel keep their memory alive.
