About the museum
The museum opened in 1981/82, set up by the Danziger Förderkreis e. V. in a Lübeck brick house whose origins lie in the late 13th century. Since 2011, the museum has been run and administered by the legally independent Stiftung Haus Hansestadt Danzig. It maintains contacts with institutions in Danzig and has a partnership with the Uphagenhaus of the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum there.
The exhibition gives an impression of the culture of Danzig and its surroundings up to the end of the Second World War. The entrance hall is designed like a Danzig townhouse and displays maps, an address book of former residents, seals and ship models. Three church bells hang in the courtyard; they come from the Hamburg Glockenfriedhof (bell cemetery).
The halls contain paintings, matchstick models of the Marienkirche and the Lange Brücke, Baroque furniture, festive costumes, and pewter and silver; some rooms are furnished true to the original. On the top floor stands a full-size reproduction of Memling's "Last Judgment", and another floor is devoted to trade, the garrison, education, brewing and Danziger Goldwasser.
