About the museum

The museum occupies a Trippelhaus built in 1745 in Betzingen, named after its steep outside staircase, which is typical of the village's farmhouses. For many generations farming was carried on here; at the beginning of the 20th century the farm belonged to one of the last full-time farmers in the village. The building is therefore considered the museum's largest exhibit.

The rooms are furnished in the style of around 1900: the best room (gute Stube), kitchen and pantry, a children's room, a grain store under the roof, and a large stable with barn. In the hayloft, panels and objects present village history, including the church, school, local authorities, industrialization, artists and photographers in the village, the spinning room (Spinnstube) and local associations. The museum also tells the story of the widely known Betzingen costume.

The museum belongs to the Historische Museen Reutlingen (Historical Museums of Reutlingen). On demonstration Sundays, members of the Betzingen local group of the Schwäbischer Albverein (Swabian Alb Association) demonstrate agricultural techniques and invite visitors to take part.
