About the museum
The museum grew out of a goldsmith gallery founded in Ahlen in 1964 by master goldsmith Werner Fischer, which hosted rotating studio exhibitions of fine art and crafts. In 1984 the Fischer family opened the Museum im Goldschmiedehaus at Oststraße 69.
Initially, two focal points stood at the center: historical timekeeping instruments and Christian art, above all sacred goldsmith's work and objects of popular piety. In 1998 an exhibition on Jewish ritual objects and Jewish life followed; later a collection area on Buddhism was added.
From this expansion developed the concept of an interreligious museum, which according to its own account is one of the few of its kind in Europe. It sees itself as a place of remembrance and understanding and works together with, among others, the Volkshochschule Ahlen (adult education center).
