About the museum
The house on Bahnhofstraße dates back to 1581 and was originally a fief of the Benediktbeuern monastery. The rubble-stone ground floor dates from the original construction, while the log-built upper floor was added in 1782. Footwear was made here from the 17th century onward; ten generations of cobblers worked in the house, which remained largely unchanged for a long time.
In 2010 the last cobbler died without children. The municipality of Kochel acquired the listed building together with its contents, and the Verein für Heimatgeschichte im Zwei-Seen-Land (local history association) played a major role in the restoration and archiving. The work was honored with the Bavarian Monument Preservation Prize in 2021; in May 2024 the house opened as a village museum.
Besides the historic cobbler's workshop, the exhibition covers topics such as the legend of the Blacksmith of Kochel, forest management and poaching, summer visitors and tourists, artists in Kochel, and the cobblers in World War I.
