About the museum
The museum complex in Hambergen-Spreddig was set up from 1980 on the initiative of town councillor Hans-Georg Taube. It began with a reconstruction of a moor cottage based on historical models, which vividly illustrates the meager and laborious life of the moor farmers. In 1980/81 a bake house with a stone oven followed, where bread and the popular Butterkuchen (butter cake) are baked seasonally.
In 1987 the Heimathaus (local heritage house) was added, an 18th-century farmhouse whose second floor houses the museum. In 1995 a forge with a working hearth was added, donated by a vocational school. The complex belongs to the municipality of Hambergen and is looked after by the Heimatverein Ströhe/Spreddig, founded in 1991, which today has around 430 members.
On display are the workshops of a saddler and a shoemaker, two looms, historical school furniture, agricultural tools and an old peat barge. The focus is on peat cutting, which shaped life in the Teufelsmoor for generations. At the crafts days in September, members show how historical tools and almost forgotten crafting techniques were used.
