About the museum

Ostheim vor der Rhön looks back on an organ-building tradition of more than 400 years: masters such as Johann Ernst Döring, Johann Georg Markert, and the brothers Otto and Louis Hoffmann worked here, and the Hoffmann firm continues today as Hoffmann & Schindler. The museum is housed in the Hansteinsches Schloss, a manor house of largely late-medieval character with stepped gables, which Cuntz von der Tann expanded at the end of the 16th century with a Renaissance wing containing a library, a music room, and an astronomical study. The building later served as, among other things, the town hospital.

After the restoration that began in 1988 with funding from the Free State of Bavaria, the town was obliged to operate a museum in the building. A museum of Thuringian and Lower Franconian crafts initially moved in in 1990, but it lost its purpose after the inner-German border opened. Together with master organ builders Horst and Günter Hoffmann and church musician Jürgen-Peter Schindler, the concept for an organ-building museum was then developed, and it opened on April 18, 1993. Its core was the collection of instruments and parts belonging to Ostheim’s organ-building families Hoffmann and Markert, supplemented by loans.

Since 2000, the museum has been run by the association Verein Orgelbaumuseum Schloss Hanstein. Between 2006 and 2008, the permanent exhibition was redesigned with EU, state, and municipal funding. The tour leads from ancient and medieval beginnings – with reconstructions of two medieval organs – through the Renaissance, Baroque, and Romantic periods to the 20th-century Organ Reform Movement; there are also harmoniums, keyboard instruments, and mechanical musical instruments. Guided tours with sound demonstrations, concerts, and activities for children shape the program.
