About the museum

The Pinakothek der Moderne was built on the site of the Türkenkaserne barracks, largely destroyed in the Second World War, which then lay derelict for a long time and served, among other things, as a venue for Circus Roncalli. In the early 1990s the Free State of Bavaria decided to build a new museum here. The project only became possible after private supporters had raised start-up funding of around ten million euros.

The building, designed by Stephan Braunfels, opened in September 2002. Its centerpiece is a top-lit rotunda roughly 30 meters across, around which square galleries are grouped; a diagonal axis connects the entrances on Barer Straße and at the Wintergarten. A planned second construction phase was postponed for cost reasons.

Four independent institutions work under one roof: the modern art collection (Sammlung Moderne Kunst) of the Bavarian State Painting Collections on the upper floor, Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum in the basement, and the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München and the Architekturmuseum der TU München on the ground floor. This makes it one of the largest museums of 20th- and 21st-century art and design in Europe.

The Sammlung Moderne Kunst comprises more than 20,000 works, from classical modernism with Beckmann, Klee and Picasso to photography, video and contemporary art. In 2026, “Can You Imagine?” launches a step-by-step re-presentation of the collection, while the café in the Wintergarten has been redesigned as the open meeting place FLUX.
