About the museum
The museum belongs to the Düsseldorf picture frame maker Conzen, which has existed since 1854 and has been known in the art world for its frames for more than 160 years. It is housed in the "Altes Haus" on Bilker Straße, a neoclassical townhouse from the 18th century that the Conzen family acquired and carefully restored; stucco work and other details from its construction period were preserved. The house also served as the model for the company's former logo.
The centerpiece is a collection of original picture frames from six centuries and various countries. It ranges from Gothic through Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque and Rococo, Empire and Biedermeier to Historicism and Art Nouveau (Jugendstil), giving an almost unbroken overview of this craft. The oldest frame dates from 1480; according to the company, the collection is among the largest of its kind in the world.
The second section is the Sammlung Alt-Düsseldorf (Old Düsseldorf Collection), with views, plans, maps and books from the 16th to the 20th century, including city views and copperplate engravings, some in contemporary frames. The museum can be visited year-round by appointment.
