About the museum
The Regionalmuseum "Alte Schule" (regional museum "Old School") is housed in the former elementary school of Oberkaufungen. It presents the folk culture of the Kaufunger area from the early Middle Ages to the present, and takes visitors through the often modest, hard-working everyday life of adults and children over the past two centuries.
A special highlight is the walk-in village schoolroom of the 1920s and 1930s. In the cellar, a tunnel system recalls the region's deep lignite mining; former miners from the Oberkaufungen colliery have reconstructed their workplaces there.
The building is currently being structurally converted and reconceived in content. Planned are an elevator for barrier-free visitor floors, fire protection and energy-efficiency renovation, a structural link to the Mitmachhaus (hands-on house), and an event room on the ground floor. The new exhibition is to open with Empress Kunigunde and retell topics such as school, half-timbering, fire brigade, crafts, forests and industrial history. The mine tunnel in the cellar will remain in its original state.
