Schloss Ronneburg
Palace complex in Ronneburg whose tower building houses a town and school museum run by the local history society, featuring a historic classroom.
About the museum
The castle in Ronneburg goes back to the Vögte (reeves) of Weida, who expanded it before 1200. From 1244 it belonged to the Vögte of Plauen; after the Vogtland War in the mid-14th century, feudal overlordship passed to the House of Wettin. In the late Middle Ages, the rear castle changed hands several times before the complex became the seat of the Wettin district office (Amt) of Ronneburg after 1548.
Over the following centuries, the castle was gradually converted into a palace: buildings at the southwest corner were added around 1520, the manor house and walls were renewed after the Thirty Years' War, and in 1772 the dilapidated round tower had to be replaced. Of the old rear castle, essentially the manor house and the Knights' Hall survive. In the late 19th century, a courthouse with an ornate stucco facade and a tower residence for the district judge were added.
As part of the 2007 Federal Garden Show (Bundesgartenschau), jointly hosted by Gera and Ronneburg, the palace courtyard and gardens were redesigned. Today the complex is used by the town, a school and local clubs; the Knights' Hall hosts events and weddings.
In the tower building, the Heimatverein Ronneburg (local history society) runs the town and school museum. On two floors, a farmhouse parlor, a living room from around 1900 and a historic classroom recall the everyday life of earlier generations; other sections cover the region's mining, the GDR era, minerals, and models and photographs on the town's development.
