About the museum

The park was founded in 1997 by the Cologne collector couple Michael and Eleonore Stoffel. On a green space of around 35,000 m² in the triangle between the Zoobrücke, Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer and Riehler Straße, they wanted to make current outdoor sculpture freely accessible. The first three presentations were still put together by a sculpture committee.

From the fourth edition onward, the park has appointed an independent curator for each installment of its exhibition series KölnSkulptur, which changes about every two years, to reinterpret the park. Since its founding, works by more than 150 artists have been shown, including Rosemarie Trockel, Dan Graham, Tony Cragg, Anish Kapoor and Alexander Calder. Many works were created specifically for the site – for example the "Garden Gallery" by Sou Fujimoto in 2011, the Japanese architect's first building outside his home country.

After the founders' deaths, the nonprofit Stiftung Skulpturenpark Köln (foundation) took over operations and funding in 2008. It relies on a supporting foundation of the Stoffel family, rental income from the collectors' former home on Elsa-Brändström-Straße and an annual operating subsidy from the city of Cologne. The park is currently between two exhibitions and showing its permanently installed works; KölnSkulptur #12 has been announced for 2027 to mark its 30th anniversary.
