Tony Cragg – New Works

New sculptures in wood and stone by the park's founder, showing his latest developments as a sculptor.

About the museum

The hillside site above the Wupper valley was once home to an excursion restaurant whose name, "Waldfrieden" (forest peace), lives on today. In 1940 the paint manufacturer Kurt Herberts bought the property; after the old house was destroyed in a 1943 bombing raid, he had the now-listed villa with its flowing, organic forms built from 1947 to 1950 to designs by the artist-architect Franz Krause. After Herberts' death in 1989, the site stood empty for a long time and became overgrown.

The Wuppertal-based British sculptor Tony Cragg was looking for a permanent place to show sculpture outdoors and acquired the property in 2006. The villa, gardener's house and park were carefully restored, and in 2008 the sculpture park opened under the umbrella of the nonprofit Cragg Foundation. The former gardener's house is now Café Podest, while the villa houses the foundation's archive and administration.

A land swap with the city added another stretch of woodland in 2012; in 2013 the park extension opened with a second exhibition hall, followed in 2017 by a third, oval hall at the highest point of the grounds. The collection comprises works by Cragg and by artists such as Henry Moore, Joan Miró, Joseph Beuys, Thomas Schütte and Eva Hild. Changing exhibitions in the halls, lectures and an education program complement the permanent presentation in the woods.
