About the museum
The StadtMuseum Pirna is one of Saxony's oldest museums. It was founded in 1861 by the Städtischer Gewerbeverein (municipal trade association); from 1878 the Gebirgsverein für die Sächsische Schweiz (mountain association for Saxon Switzerland) also built up its own collections on natural history, folklore and local history. Both holdings were later merged.
Since 1923 the exhibitions have been housed in the chapter hall building of the former Dominican monastery. After a long restoration, the house reopened in 1993 with exhibitions on Elbe sandstone and town history. A remnant of the monastery building, partly from the cloister era, was turned into the entrance building; the combination of old masonry and modern interiors was honored in a competition by the Federal Ministry for Building.
The collection today comprises more than 80,000 objects. The permanent exhibition shows over 300 of them and tells Pirna's story from its beginnings to the early 19th century, including town models of its medieval development. The chapter hall and the adjoining monastery church give insight into church life of the time. The museum also sees itself as a place of historical research and education, and provides a media library for study purposes.
