About the museum

The Stadtmuseum Steinfurt opened in 1987. It grew out of a municipal local heritage collection from 1911, which was greatly expanded through numerous private donations and gifts. The museum is in Burgsteinfurt opposite the Hohe Schule (an academy) and shares the building with the municipal archive, with which it works closely.

The exhibition gives an overview of local history from the early Middle Ages to the early 19th century and focuses on the economic, social and territorial development of Steinfurt. Themes include the founding of the settlement “Stenvorde,” urban life in the Middle Ages, the Order of St. John (Johanniterorden), the Reformation, the Hohe Schule and the residence of the 18th century.

A dedicated Bagno room with a model explains the importance of the Bagno landscape park as an educational trail in the 18th century. The museum is looked after by the “Geschichtswerkstatt” (history workshop) of the Heimatverein Burgsteinfurt (local heritage association), a team of volunteers who develop new exhibition ideas; all objects have been recorded in a database and photographed.
