Willkommen im Paradies

Taking the famous Little Garden of Paradise as its starting point, the show explores paradise as a place of longing and the relationship between art and the perception of nature.

About the museum

The Städel traces its origins to the Frankfurt banker and merchant Johann Friedrich Städel, who in his will of 1815 left his fortune and art collection to a foundation bearing his name. It was to maintain a public collection and at the same time train young artists – a dual mission that also gave rise to today's art academy, the Städelschule. This makes it the oldest museum foundation in Germany.

The collection was initially housed in Städel's home on Roßmarkt. In 1878, the institute moved into the stately new building by Oskar Sommer on Schaumainkai, on the Sachsenhausen side of the Main, which remains the heart of the museum today. During the Nazi era, 77 paintings were confiscated as "degenerate art", and bombing raids in 1944 severely damaged the building; after reconstruction, the museum reopened in 1963.

The museum was expanded in several stages: an extension by Gustav Peichl was added in 1990, and in 2012 the underground Gartenhallen (garden halls) opened with around 3,000 square meters for contemporary art, their round skylights now a defining feature of the garden. Today, visitors can also reach a rooftop terrace with a view of the skyline via the Old Masters collection.

The collection comprises around 3,100 paintings, a good 600 sculptures, more than 100,000 drawings and prints, and thousands of photographs. It offers an almost complete overview of seven centuries of European art, from the early 14th century through the Renaissance, Baroque and modernism to the present day.
