About the museum

In February 1998, the city of Wasungen gave the Landesverband Thüringer Karnevalvereine rooms in the former Damenstift (women's foundation) for a carnival museum. Members of the tradition committee then designed the exhibition piece by piece on a volunteer basis; the permanent exhibition officially opened in spring 2004.

From 2006 the museum was redesigned and divided into two thematic rooms. The smaller room is devoted to carnival in the GDR, that is, celebrating under shortage economy and under regulation and control by the authorities. The larger room shows the variety of carnival in Thuringia, with artifacts from numerous clubs.

The museum is on the first floor of the Damenstift, founded in 1596, whose upper floors house the Stadtmuseum Wasungen (city museum) and the city tourist information. Currently the museum is closed until further notice after water damage.
