Thüringer Korbmachermuseum
Local history association museum at Burg Tannroda on the Thuringian basket-making craft with a basket maker's home from around 1920 and designs by Henry van de Velde.
About the museum
In Tannroda, today a district of Bad Berka, basket weaving has a long tradition. To keep it alive, 18 friends of local history founded the Heimatverein Tannroda in March 1996, whose main goal was to build, operate and maintain a basket-making museum. The museum is in the arcade in the northern part of Burg Tannroda. The foundations of the complex go back to the 12th century, most of today's buildings date from the early 18th century; since 2017 a foundation has been caring for the renovation and revitalization of the castle.
The collection comprises handmade pieces by Thuringian basket makers from between 1850 and 1990 – everyday utility items such as baby carriages, but also special pieces such as a woven desk and handicraft works. A separate section is devoted to Henry van de Velde and his connection to the Tannroda basket makers; the association shows several of the designer's drafts.
On the upper floor, a plain basket maker's home with a workshop from around 1920 has been set up, a film shows how a willow basket is made, and on certain days a basket weaver demonstrates his craft. The ground floor tells the history of the town and castle of Tannroda with Böttelborn and Kottendorf. Under the roof are toys with a dollhouse from 1898, historic linens, a matchbox collection and pieces from the estate of the basket maker Otto Schreck (1883–1959).
