About the museum

The Tunnelmuseum was created around 2000 in connection with the major construction projects that routed the A 71 autobahn and the new Erfurt–Nuremberg high-speed ICE line through the Ilm Valley. About two kilometers southwest of the village lies the Behringen Tunnel, which consists of three closely parallel tubes – two for the autobahn and one for the railroad.

The centerpiece of the museum is a walk-through 1:4 scale model of this structure, built from original construction materials. It shows how a tunnel is excavated, secured, and finished using the New Austrian Tunneling Method. Panels provide additional information on the geology of the subsoil, the excavation technology, and the machines and tools used.

Another focus is how the transportation projects changed the landscape: photos, aerial images, and topographic maps compare conditions before and after construction and show how dramatically the routes reshaped the valley. The town of Stadtilm, to which Niederwillingen now belongs, currently lists the museum as closed on its website.
