Hältzers Persien // Update Iran

The photographic work of the engineer Ernst Hältzer, who worked for the telegraph service in Persia in the 19th century, is shown for the first time. His photographs meet works by contemporary Iranian artists.

About the museum

The university museum is located in the Löwengebäude, the main building of Martin Luther University on Universitätsplatz. The late-classicist building was constructed in 1832–1834 to plans by Ernst Friedrich Zwinger and Wilhelm Heinrich Matthias, on the site of the former Barefoot Friars' monastery; it was donated by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia. Because funds ran short, only the central stairwell was built; the planned side wings were never erected.

From 1994 to 2004 the building was restored in accordance with heritage requirements, including the Aula and the Sessionssaal (session hall). In this context the Museum universitatis was created. The Zentrale Kustodie (central university collections office), which looks after the university's art collection, has existed since October 18, 1979.

Since 2004 the permanent exhibition “Schätze der Universität” (Treasures of the University) has displayed the insignia of the universities of Halle and Wittenberg and outstanding objects from the scientific collections, including holdings from the Archaeological Museum, the German Oriental Society, anatomy, zoology and the university archive. A special exhibition room is devoted to topics in the history of science, and the Kupferstichkabinett (print cabinet) shows cabinet exhibitions.
