About the museum

Universum Bremen was conceived as a science center with a strong hands-on, experiential character, right next to the University of Bremen. Project development was handled by a company founded for the purpose, which worked closely with the university and Bremen businesses. After a construction period of only about a year and a half, it opened on September 9, 2000, and attracted nearly 2.5 million visitors in its first five years.

Its defining feature is the main building by Bremen architect Thomas Klumpp: clad in around 40,000 stainless steel shingles, it resembles a whale or a seashell and has become a city landmark. In 2007 a cube-shaped building with a rust-red Corten steel facade for special exhibitions was added, along with an outdoor area of around 5,000 square meters featuring the 27-meter Turm der Lüfte (Tower of the Winds); both were designed by the firm Haslob Kruse + Partner.

After 14 years of operation, the permanent exhibition was completely renewed within a few months and reopened in March 2015. Instead of the original “expeditions,” it has since been organized into the theme levels Technology, Humans and Nature, supplemented by multimedia stations and insights into current research. Since 2013 the City of Bremen has been the sponsoring body; the center is run by the Universum Managementgesellschaft with around 100 employees. From November 2026 to March 2027 the permanent exhibition will once again undergo a major overhaul.
