About the museum

The Veterinärmedizinhistorisches Museum of the Stiftung Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover was founded in 1973 by Ernst-Heinrich Lochmann. It is considered the only publicly accessible specialist museum of its kind in Germany. The university itself goes back to the Roß-Arzney-Schule (horse-medicine school) founded by King George III in 1778; its development up to its recognition as a university in 1913 and beyond forms part of the exhibition.

The exhibition was renewed in 1989, and in 1995 a military history section with around 300 objects was added. The permanent exhibition shows more than 650 objects; the total holdings of instruments, equipment, documents, publications and pictures number about 6,000 items, most of which are kept in storage. The museum uses about 230 square meters.

On display are instruments and equipment used in diagnosis, surgery, bloodletting, dentistry, obstetrics, castration, pain relief, hoof treatment and disease control. The selection is presented so that it is also understandable to non-specialists; the setup of a rural veterinary practice from the 1930s illustrates everyday professional life.
