Zeppelin Museum Meersburg
Private museum in Meersburg's upper town with one of the largest collections of original components, documents and objects from the era of Zeppelin airships.
About the museum
The Zeppelin Museum Meersburg goes back to the collector and airship historian Heinz Urban, who was fascinated by zeppelins from a young age and gathered thousands of airship-related objects over decades. In 1989 he made his collection accessible to the public in Meersburg; to this day it remains a purely private museum, funded by admission fees and donations without public subsidies.
The exhibition is housed in the basement of a medieval building on Schlossplatz, on the stairway between Steigstraße and Burg Meersburg. According to the museum, it is the second-oldest house in town. Only historical originals are on display; the museum deliberately does without replicas.
On view are aluminum girders and other airship components, radio and navigation equipment, uniforms, onboard tableware, menus, letters and books from roughly 1900 to 1937. Besides civilian passenger flight, a key focus is the airships of the Imperial German Navy in World War I. A short film introduces the history of the zeppelins, and a friends' association devoted to zeppelin history supports the museum's work.
