About the museum
Gerðarsafn was built in memory of the artist Gerður Helgadóttir (1928–1975) and opened in 1994. Gerður was a pioneer of three-dimensional abstract art and glass art in Iceland. It is the only Icelandic museum built to honour a woman in the visual arts.
The collection includes over 1,400 works by Gerður, as well as a large holding of works by the 20th-century artists Barbara Árnason, Magnús Á. Árnason and Valgerður Briem, and by various contemporary artists. The museum focuses on modern and contemporary art. It presents exhibitions with works by Icelandic and foreign artists and also shows works from its own collection.
The restaurant Krónikan on the first floor opened in late summer 2023 and can be entered directly from the museum garden. The museum also has a museum shop and education for children and young people under the name Stúdío Gerðar.
