About the museum
The visitor centre of Þingvellir National Park stands at Hakið by Route 1, just beside the viewing platform where the path goes down into Almannagjá. There visitors get information about the national park, hiking trails and points of interest.
The visitor centre houses the interactive exhibition Hjarta Íslands (Heart of Iceland), which takes visitors through the history and nature of Þingvellir in about 40 minutes. The exhibition has around ten interactive stations and covers, among other things, continental drift, how the Lögrétta (Law Council) worked in former times, the image of Þingvellir through the centuries, and archaeology, where visitors dig up old objects digitally. It won two Red Dot design awards in 2019, one for information design and one for interface design and user experience.
The building has received the BREEAM environmental certification and was awarded three stars out of a possible five. There is also space for temporary exhibitions in the corridors of the exhibition.
