About the museum
Nýlistasafnið was founded in 1978 by a group of artists and is one of the oldest artist-run museums and exhibition spaces in Europe. Exhibitions began in the early 1980s, and many of them have marked turning points in Icelandic art history.
The museum preserves more than 2,200 works from the 1950s to the present day, donated by artists, agents, collectors and people connected with the museum. Its aim is to preserve and show contemporary art and to be a forum for experimentation and international discussion of the visual arts.
The exhibition space is in the Marshall House at Grandagarður 20. The collection and research facilities are at Völvufell 13–21 in Efra-Breiðholt.
