About the museum

Jón Sigurðsson, leader of the Icelandic independence movement in the 19th century, was born at Hrafnseyri by Arnarfjörður on 17 June 1811. Iceland's national day is held on his birthday, and the republic was founded on the same day in 1944. Hrafnseyri is therefore a memorial site to him and also a cultural centre, where the history of the place and the region is told.

On the bicentenary of Jón's birth, 17 June 2011, a new exhibition about him opened. The exhibition space was considerably enlarged, and the exhibition was designed from scratch by Basalt architects. It is a historical exhibition that traces Jón's life. The information is displayed on a casing of plexiglass that flows like a continuous stream from one room to the next. The casing is clear where objects stand behind it, or dense with images and text, so that the exhibition forms a single whole.

Summer exhibitions have also been held at Hrafnseyri, for example on archaeological research in Arnarfjörður and on settlement-era objects found at Hrafnseyri and Auðkúla. There is a café in the main building, and a celebration programme is held on the national day. The museum is run by the Hrafnseyrarnefnd (Hrafnseyri Committee) and is free for individuals.
