About the museum
Víkingaheimar is in Njarðvík in Reykjanesbær, about a ten-minute drive from Keflavík Airport. The museum opened in spring 2009 and is built around the Viking ship Íslendingur, a replica of a ship from the Viking Age.
Íslendingur sailed from Reykjavík on 17 June 2000 and arrived in New York on 5 October that year. The route ran through Brattahlíð in Greenland and L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, the only confirmed Norse settlement on the North American mainland. The ship has since found its place in the museum.
The museum's exhibitions include Norse objects found in archaeological excavations across areas settled by the Norse, an exhibition on the Vikings of the North Atlantic, and an exhibition on the settlement of Iceland. Visitors are encouraged to allow 60–90 minutes for their visit.
