About the museum
The Corlea Trackway is a togher, an Iron Age road, built in the year 148 BC across the raised bog and known locally as the Danes’ Road. It was made of heavy oak planks that sank into the peat, which preserved the timbers for about two thousand years. It is described as the largest road of its kind uncovered in Europe.
Historians think the road may have formed part of a ceremonial highway that linked the Hill of Uisneach with the royal site of Rathcroghan.
An 18-metre stretch of the ancient trackway is on permanent display in a purpose-designed hall, and the visit includes an audiovisual show and interpretation of the bog, the construction of the road and life in the Iron Age. The centre is run by the Office of Public Works and can only be visited on a guided tour. It recently received funding under Fáilte Ireland’s Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme for a feasibility study on its sustainable development.
