About the museum
Dalkey Castle is a fortified townhouse of the fourteenth century, one of the seven fortified townhouse castles of this type that are recorded in the medieval town of Dalkey. The castle is joined to the churchyard of St Begnet's, a site with a tenth-century church, and the two are protected together as a recorded national monument.
Today the castle is run as a heritage centre. The standard visit is a guided tour of about 70 minutes in which local guides and actors from Deilg Inis Theatre Company, in period costume, bring the medieval castle and its people to life. The route includes the ground-floor heritage centre with interactive screens and scale models, a barber-surgeon scene, the upper levels of the castle and the churchyard.
A Writers' Gallery honours authors connected with Dalkey, and the centre also offers guided coastal walks with a historical or literary theme and hosts events such as Bloomsday and a literary festival.
