Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship

Full-size replica of a Famine emigrant ship moored in the Dublin Docklands, visited on a guided tour of about 50 minutes.

Opening hoursAdmission €16

About the museum

The original Jeanie Johnston was built in Quebec in 1847 by the Scottish-born shipbuilder John Munn and bought by the Kerry merchants John Donovan and Sons. Her maiden voyage from Blennerville near Tralee to Quebec took place in 1848 with 193 passengers. Over 16 transatlantic crossings during the Famine years she carried about 2,500 Irish emigrants to North America.

The ship moored in Dublin today is an authentic replica, built as a memorial to the people who left Ireland during the Great Famine. Re-creating the vessel was one of the most ambitious maritime heritage projects ever undertaken in Ireland.

Visitors cross a gangplank onto the ship and join a guide who explains the history of the vessel, the stories of some of its real passengers and crew, life on board and the wider context of the Famine, which saw roughly a quarter of Ireland's population die or emigrate.
