About the museum
The Kerry Bog Village lies on the Ring of Kerry between Killorglin and Glenbeigh, at the foot of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and surrounded by the bogland of Ballintleave. It is a reconstructed village that gives an insight into how people lived and worked in rural Ireland in the late nineteenth century, including the years of the Famine.
The village consists of period thatched cottages that are fully furnished with authentic antiques, with sound effects and figures to bring the rooms to life. Outdoors, a collection of farm tools used by turf cutters and farmers of the time is on display, and the museum explains how peat was cut and used as the main fuel for heating and cooking. Visitors are given a booklet describing each cottage and point of interest, available in many languages, including English, Irish, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Japanese.
Live animals are a feature of the visit. The Kerry bog pony, a breed that almost became extinct and was rebuilt from a herd of 20 ponies found in 1994, can be seen here, along with Irish wolfhounds. The Red Fox bar and restaurant stands immediately beside the village.
