About the museum

Lismore Heritage Centre tells the story of Lismore, a small town in the Blackwater Valley with a very long history. The monastery of Lismore was founded by St Carthage in 636 and became a centre of learning for centuries, and it is said that more than twenty-seven saints are buried around the town. Vikings and Normans later fought over it, and the story of Lismore Castle runs through the centuries from King John’s fortress of 1185 to the Cavendish family, who rebuilt it as the Gothic castle seen today.

Lismore Castle is a private home, so visitors cannot enter it. The centre therefore offers the Lismore Castle Experience, a 30-minute virtual reality tour in which Robert Boyle, the scientist born at Lismore, narrates the story of the castle and the people who lived in or visited it, among them Sir Walter Raleigh, Fred Astaire and John F. Kennedy. The visit also includes a costume room, a guide to local walks and a short introductory talk on the town.

The centre also offers guided town tours, a Robert Boyle escape room and STEM workshops for schools. It serves as a base for community groups and festivals in Lismore, and a shop sells local produce.
