About the museum
Maynooth Castle was founded in the early thirteenth century and became the seat of the FitzGeralds, who rose to be earls of Kildare and among the most powerful families in Ireland. Garret Mór, the Great Earl of Kildare, governed Ireland in the king's name from 1487 to 1513. The castle was one of the largest and richest Geraldine residences.
The original keep, begun around 1200, was one of the biggest of its kind in Ireland, and its great hall was a centre of political power and culture. The ruins lie in the middle of the town of Maynooth, about 30 km from Dublin, in well-kept grounds.
Visitors can see an exhibition inside the keep on the history of the castle and of the Geraldine family, and guided tours are offered. Entry is free.
