About the museum
Tullow Museum is housed in the former Tullow Wesleyan Methodist church, a stone building of about 1850 beside the River Slaney bridge on Bridge Street. It is owned and run entirely by volunteers of the Tullowphelim Historical Society, a registered charity that depends on donations and a small annual subsidy from Carlow County Council.
The collection is built around local history. A central theme is Fr John Murphy, a leader of the 1798 Rebellion who was captured near Tullow and executed in the town square, where a monument now stands; the museum holds items said to be his last vestments. Other displays cover the Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, whose family roots lie in County Carlow, and about thirty personal items of Thomas Traynor, with a granite monument near his birthplace at Cannonsquarter.
The museum also keeps local records such as billheads, journals, old photographs, burial records and genealogy resources, and the society welcomes school groups and answers family-history enquiries from abroad.
