About the museum
Arturo Toscanini was born in Parma on 25 March 1867 in the house in Borgo Rodolfo Tanzi, in the working-class Oltretorrente district, known for its passion for music and its political liveliness. The conductor died in Riverdale, near New York, in 1957, after spending the last twenty years in the United States, where he had moved in opposition to Fascism.
The house was bought by the Maestro’s children and donated to the city; it became a museum in 1967, for the centenary of his birth. The rooms, small and with low ceilings, hold memorabilia, objects and documents from the homes in which Toscanini lived, arranged chronologically to follow his long career.
The route includes the entrance and corridor, the room in which he was born, a room dedicated to the Maestro, a small kitchen, the piano room and an audio-visual room. More recent donations have enlarged the collection, and one room houses the archive of the tenor Aureliano Pertile, who sang with Toscanini. The museum is part of the network of the Case e Studi delle Persone Illustri of Emilia-Romagna and is included in the combined ticket of the civic museums of Parma.
