Chiesa di Santa Corona

13th-century Dominican church in Vicenza, with Palladio’s Valmarana Chapel and masterpieces by Giovanni Bellini and Paolo Veronese.

Opening hoursAdmission €4 Partially accessible

About the museum

The church was founded by the Dominicans, and work began in 1261 to house a relic of the Holy Thorn (Santa Spina), given by Louis IX of France to the bishop of Vicenza, Bartolomeo da Breganze. The building takes its name from this relic.

The interior holds major works of Venetian painting. On the Garzadori altar is Giovanni Bellini’s Baptism of Christ; there is also Paolo Veronese’s Adoration of the Magi and a large altarpiece with the Magdalene and saints by Bartolomeo Montagna.

Among the works are also Lorenzo Veneziano and Marcello Fogolino’s Madonna delle Stelle, an altarpiece by Giambattista Pittoni, the carved and inlaid wooden choir by Pier Antonio dell’Abate in the apse and, in the Thiene Chapel, frescoes from the early 15th century by Michelino da Besozzo.

In the crypt are a sculptural group by Girolamo Pittoni and the Valmarana Chapel designed by Andrea Palladio. The church is part of the monuments of the Musei Civici di Vicenza and can be visited with a ticket.
