About the museum

The Museo Bagatti Valsecchi is a house museum arising from the collecting story of two brothers, the barons Fausto and Giuseppe Bagatti Valsecchi. From the 1880s they devoted themselves to the renovation of the family home, a palace between via Gesù and via Santo Spirito, today in the heart of the Quadrilatero della Moda. At the same time they collected paintings and decorative arts objects of the 15th and 16th centuries, with the intention of displaying them in the house and creating a residence inspired by the aristocratic homes of sixteenth-century Lombardy.

The project was based on close coherence between the rooms and the works they contain. The brothers drew on a rich library of volumes on architecture, painting, sculpture and decorative arts, which served them as a vast visual repertoire. While the residence was still private, the so-called Casa Artistica attracted scholars, collectors and simple curious visitors: over 10,000 signatures, collected in three volumes from 1886 to 1975, are kept in the guest book and can now also be consulted in digital form.

The house is now run by the Fondazione Bagatti Valsecchi and open to the public as a museum, which celebrated thirty years of activity in 2024. Since 2008 it has been part of the circuit of the Case Museo di Milano together with Casa Boschi di Stefano, Villa Necchi Campiglio and Museo Poldi Pezzoli. The route passes through the historic rooms, from the entrance staircase to the library, from the bedrooms to the gallery of arms, and also offers digital tools such as the app with audio guides and an augmented-reality route through the archives.
