About the museum
The museum was founded in 1891 to preserve the original works that over seven centuries decorated the monuments of the Santa Maria del Fiore complex: the cathedral, the Baptistery and Giotto’s Campanile. Many sculptures were replaced by copies outside, to protect them from the weather.
In 2015 the museum was radically renovated and expanded. Today it occupies over 6,000 square metres in 28 rooms on three floors, and it offers an educational route to discover the places and artists who created the Opera’s monumental complex.
Among the masterpieces preserved are works by Michelangelo, Donatello, Brunelleschi and Ghiberti, alongside a heritage of sculptures, goldsmith’s work, vestments and architectural models. The museum is managed by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore and can be visited with the Opera’s combined passes.
