About the museum
The museum was opened in 1927 at the wish of Cardinal Alessandro Lualdi. The initial collection, chosen by Monsignor Guido Anichini, consisted mainly of sculptures from the Cathedral, Renaissance and Baroque reliefs and finds from destroyed or decommissioned churches, as well as an important loan from the Museo Nazionale, today the Galleria Regionale di Palazzo Abatellis.
In 1952 the museum was reorganised to also house works that had survived the bombings. A third display was inaugurated in 1972, with works transferred from churches that were not safe, after the theft of Caravaggio's Nativity from the Oratory of San Lorenzo in 1969, which has never been recovered. The fourth display, scientifically curated by Maria Concetta Di Natale, dates from 2004.
On 10 July 2021 the current fifth display was inaugurated, curated by Pierfrancesco Palazzotto. The museum occupies the part of the Palazzo Arcivescovile that overlooks Via Matteo Bonello: the route unfolds across the basement, ground floor and piano nobile (main floor) in 27 rooms, and presents about 300 works among paintings, sculptures and decorative arts, from the 12th to the 19th century.
